Beauty the Barn Owl by VixSky Beauty the Barn Owl by VixSky
So here is my most recent painting, it is of a Barn Owl.. I havn't done a proper painting since summer last year, and this is a whole year after Elephants..

I'm quite pleased with how it came out, it is on canvas, quite large (dont ask for measurments) and done in acrilics..

Strangley, the white on the front was the hardest of all, just getting the shading and the feathers right.. I enjoyed doing the face, and the wing was a little but tideous..

But anyways, I'm quite pleased and I'm finally getting into painting again :D :D

It certainly looks very good so well done. Do you do these pics from reference images or sometimes out of your head? My animal pics that have a lot of detail in them are from reference but other stuff I do out of my imagination cus I wonna test myself cus I wonna do a degree in Illustration someday.

Aaaanyway how are you getting on at college and in general?

Oh thank you very much :) :) and yess, I usaully have a few reference images to use, as I havn't seen enough of the animal to do it from my head..
Hehe, yeah college is going quite well thanks.. We are starting to chose a specific area to study now for the next year, and I'm thinking about Photography (cause I love taking pictures and using the Dark Room) and Fine Art :D :D And how are you doing, illistration sounds good??

That's ok. Oh ok well I use references sometimes though try to do it from my head as much as I can cus I wonna get into illsutration and animation. Sorry for the late reply but I've been working loads lately, I've been into college five days a week for the last fortnight 0_0.

Cool, college is pretty good for me as well and doing plenty of extra work cus I want to get the best mark I can cus I wonna go to Anglia Ruskin University (Cambridge) and that's pretty hard to get into apparently. Yea I heard that about GAD that you do general study for a year then specify later on.

I'm doing pretty good and starting to do some drawn animation as it's'a' coming back in the form of the Princess and the Frog and I'm super hyped up about it ya know cus hand drawn is where it's at. Apart from that I'm...err...working more lol but it's all good :).

Wow, that sounds good.. Yeah, I'm so glad that hand drawing is coming back in nowadays, as I'm not the best with computers, although I'm trying.. I'm also quite busy with college and painting now also.. But good luck with getting into Uni :D :D

Yea sure does. Yea I can see from your art that you are amazing with traditional medias like coloured pencil and Acrylic. Do you ever use retarder to help blend acrylics?

I'm not great with computers but can just about manage with what I know. I tried using Maya lately which is a really complex 3-D animating package and failed totally lol. I think traditional media is more my thing. By the way if you wonna make things in nature for example look realistic do you use digital media or traditional? It's really been bugging me lately as so many people afre saying so many things about what to use in animation and they contrast aaaaahhhh!!! Yea I like backgrounds but wish to become brilliant at them!

Good luck with college and your painting ok.

(sorry for late reply) Hehe, yeah I only use the paint brush and water to blend the paints and it works quite well for me.. I'm not really much good with computers either and I usaully use traditional for realistics :) :)

Good luck to you too :D :D

Amen to that. I love painting and drawing traditionallly but try my hand with graphics tablets on Photoshop since digital seems to be the way forward for games designers and illustrators nowadays but not all of them like Jon Howe.

I like this - the slightly stylized feathers and texture are really interesting, but still look very much like an owl. I think I would like this a lot more though, if the background weren't completely dark. It separates the owl from the canvas, as though it were cut out and pasted on top. It's very sculptural as-is.

oh thank you very much, and yeah I was going to make the background a lighter grey to give it more depth, but I didn't for some reason.. but thank you again :D :D
